Every year, Baby Loss Awareness Week takes place from 9 to 15 October. A week in which worldwide attention is drawn to infant mortality every year.
Support centre Nova is a member of the International Baby Loss Awareness Alliance and is in line with what has been discussed worldwide in the Netherlands.
Through various activities, we want to raise awareness for baby loss.
Follow us on instagram and Facebook for all the latest information about the BLAW.

The theme for 2023 was THIS IS INFANT MORTALITY.

with the following subthemes*:
Love – Sadness – Pride – Fear – Hope – Guilt – Gratitude

The whole week there was a glass house on the Esplanade in Almere with an LED screen on which more than 600 names of babies who are so missed were projected. In this way we try to alleviate the pain of the parents and literally put these children in the light.

Artists Lonneke Cuppen and Jurrian van den Haak have designed and created six light artworks that depict the emotions/sub-themes and that were on display at the Weerwater throughout the week.
Love (Rose), Sadness (Wisteria), Pride (Sunflower), Fear (Thistle), Guilt (Dandelion), Gratitude (Water Lily). The Hope emotion was provided by Strand 22 by illuminating their lighting in rainbow colors throughout the week.
The artworks are FOR SALE for € 2000.00 each. From now on, they must be inside so beautiful for a hall in a hotel, company, cemetery, crematorium, villa, etc. All proceeds will benefit charity.

OPENING

On Sunday, October 8, 2023 , the official opening of the BLAW was held in the Kunstlinie in Almere, with a joint walk, speeches by alderman Froukje de Jonge, Mayson’s grandmother*, Tanja Jansen, fetal medicine doctor Daphne Voormolen and chairman of Steunpunt Nova Ruth van den IJssel. At 19.45 the lights of the Glass House and the light sculptures were lit and Laurien Wiegerinck sang the song Blue Rain, which she composed and wrote especially for the BLAW.

On Sunday, October 15, 2023 , the BLAW in Almere closed with the Wave of Light.
All attendees were welcomed in the Kunstlinie with a snack and drink and were invited to make a flower boat for their deceased child and to decorate a lantern. At 7 p.m. we were all standing at a candlelit Weerwater and the boats were released onto the water.

DONATE

A lot of money is needed for this week and all our other activities. You can donate here. This way we can organize a beautiful and connecting BLAW again next year.
You can create a personal donation page throughout the year to sponsor an activity you organize on behalf of your child. For example, you can organize a run or participate in a marathon. But you can also make/bake something and sell it.
If you’re going to raise money for Steunpunt Nova, your first step is probably to ask friends and family for donations. Good idea of course! But if you want to raise more money, think of local entrepreneurs, employers, bottle action at the supermarket, service clubs such as Rotary, Lions clubs, soroptimists, Junior Room, etc. Be creative, because with all the donations that come in, we can develop great initiatives for parents who lose/have lost a baby.

What do we spend all donations on?

  • Help cards for birth care providers that they can give to parents so they can see at a glance what they can think about, don’t overlook anything, and don’t regret anything afterwards.
  • Maintain the website of Steunpunt Nova where parents who lose a baby can find all the information they need
  • Remembrance days
  • Baby Loss Awareness Week

PROJECTS FOR 2024

  • Milestones cards for parents who have lost a baby
  • Calendar for pregnancy after loss of a baby
  • Information video about examination of the baby and placenta in order to better map the cause of infant death.
DAY OPENING

Each day of the BLAW opened with a video in which a guest speaker discusses the emotion of that day. At the end of each video, the guest speaker invites you to complete an assignment that will bring you closer to your child, or can help you weave love and grief together in your life.
You can find the videos on our instagram page, and below:

How you can help raise awareness:

*Because the loss of a baby brings so many different and conflicting emotions, we want to address some of the most common emotions in the 2023 BLAW. The love for the baby is just like a living child and will never cease to exist. This also applies to pride. Gratitude often arises a little later, grateful for what this child has brought, grateful for all the lovely people around you, grateful for all the help, grateful for new insights. Hope for a new child who can stay is often there almost immediately, but also hope for better days when the sun can shine again. The sadness is immense when your whole future is shattered and although most parents who lose a baby do become happy again in the long run, it will always be sad that you can’t see one of your children grow up. All your certainties in life are gone the moment you lose your baby and that makes you anxious. You step into a completely unknown world of grief. This, in combination with the fear of giving birth and the physical pain, often makes mothers in particular say that they have never been so afraid in their entire lives. Many parents feel guilty that they didn’t pick up on signals, that they didn’t prevent death, that they weren’t there enough for their child. And later on, they often feel guilty towards each other, towards other children and towards the people around them.

FRIDAY 15 OCTOBER 2021 DAY 7 BLAW 2021 WAVE OF LIGHT

The BLAW ended on Friday 15 October with a Wave of Light. Worldwide, candles are lit at exactly 19:00 (local time) for deceased babies, to commemorate that they have been there. This creates a Wave of light all over the world.
We did this together from Steunpunt Nova in Nunspeet at Hotel Sparrenhorst. With this we also closed the Baby Loss Awareness Week and Walk for Nova.
At 5.30 pm there was the opportunity to run a last (short) stage of the Loop voor Nova together. The course was beautifully lit especially for us. In the Oranjepark we called the names of the children and burned candles.

Writing about your loss

On the seven topics that fall under the 2021 BLAW theme “WELL-BEING”, you can join in writing about your loss on all days of the BLAW. This year we are doing this together with the Hanne Foundation. Marlieke, mother of Hanne and founder of this foundation, has designed beautiful cards.
Will you join us? May we share your contribution? Then tag @steunpuntnova and @stichtinghanne in your post.
We are curious about your contributions and hope that writing may offer comfort.

Pin
Order the BLAW pin in our webshop and wear it during the Baby Loss Awareness Week, e.g. during the Loop voor Nova. It can be a reason for a nice conversation.

Because Steunpunt Nova is a member and supporter of the BLAW Alliance in the United Kingdom, we are in line with the theme of the UK, which is “wellbeing”. Well-being of the mother, the father, the grandmothers, the grandfathers, the brothers and sisters, family and friends. But also the well-being of the caregiver.
Every day we will highlight a different side of the subject and those involved in the loss will come to the
word.
